Bringing the Family North: What Canadian Casino Relocation Packages Really Cover for Partners and Kids

The Bit of the Offer Letter Nobody Reads Until It's Too Late
If you've been dealing blackjack in Leeds or working the poker room in Birmingham, a relocation offer from a Canadian casino group can look like a lottery win. Relocation allowance, flights, help with housing — the works. But here's the catch: most of those packages are written with a single person in mind. The moment you mention a spouse and two kids at parents' evening, the picture changes dramatically.
We spoke to UK families who've made the move to find out what's genuinely covered, what's negotiable, and what'll come straight out of your own pocket.
Spousal Visas: The First Hurdle
Let's start with the big one. Your own work permit is usually handled by the employer — that's the whole point of them sponsoring you. Your partner's status is a different beast entirely.
Under Canada's spousal open work permit scheme, the husband, wife or common-law partner of a foreign worker can generally apply for an open work permit of their own. That's the good news. The less good news is that the employer will almost never pay for it. Expect fees in the region of CAD $255 for the permit itself, plus biometrics, and potentially more if your partner needs a medical exam.
One couple we spoke to — a croupier from Glasgow who moved to Calgary — told us the employer 'genuinely didn't understand the question' when they asked about spousal visa support. 'They said, isn't she just coming with you? Legally, no, she isn't. She's applying on her own merits, attached to my status.'
What to ask: Does the employer's immigration lawyer or consultant assist with family applications, even if you're paying the fees yourself? Some do, and that advice alone is worth hundreds of dollars.
School Places and the Great September Scramble
If you've got kids, timing matters more than you think. Canadian public schooling is free and excellent by most measures, but enrolment depends on catchment areas — and arriving mid-term in January with no fixed address puts you at the back of the queue.
Here's the honest truth: virtually no Canadian casino employer covers school placement support. It's not malicious; it's just not on their radar. What some will do — particularly the larger operators in Ontario and Alberta — is offer a housing liaison or relocation coordinator who can point you at the right school board.
A pit boss who relocated from Nottingham to Winnipeg told us: 'The company paid for our flights and a month's temporary accommodation. Everything to do with the kids — finding a school, registering with a doctor, sorting out the health card — that was all on us. Thank goodness for Facebook groups.'
What to ask: Is there a named person at the company who handles relocation questions? A month of temporary housing? A housing allowance rather than a lump sum? These details matter more than a bigger signing bonus.
Family Flights: Economy for You, Maybe Nothing for Them
The standard relocation package typically covers one flight — yours. Some employers extend it to a partner. Very few cover children, and almost none will cover anything beyond economy.
That said, families have had luck negotiating. If you're a dual-rate dealer or experienced inspector, you have leverage. One couple negotiated two extra seats by asking for them instead of a higher relocation cash allowance — which cost the employer less and gave them what they actually needed.
Remember that Canadian employers often book flights through corporate travel agents, so a direct 'we'll cover the family' promise can turn into a booking system that only lists one passenger. Get everything in writing before you sign.
The Hidden Costs Nobody Mentions
Beyond visas and flights, budget for:
- Winter kit for four people, not one. Coats, boots and tyres for a Saskatchewan winter don't come cheap.
- Dental and vision cover — provincial health insurance doesn't cover everything, and employer benefits may take three months to kick in for dependants.
- Childcare — Canadian daycare waitlists are legendary, and costs in Toronto or Vancouver can rival a second mortgage.
- Shipping your stuff — most families we spoke to sold up and flew with suitcases. Container shipping rarely makes financial sense.
The Verdict: Ask Before You Say Yes
Canadian casino groups are genuinely keen on UK dealers — the training, the work ethic and the familiar games all translate beautifully. But relocation packages are written for lone wolves, not family packs. Before you accept that offer from Niagara Falls or Edmonton, sit down with the offer letter, a highlighter, and a very specific list of family questions.
The best employers will answer them all without flinching. The ones who go quiet? That's your answer too.
